The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organizations, is a prestigious program offering exceptional young professionals worldwide the chance to pursue a master’s degree at top UK universities. In this blog post, we will guide you through the Chevening Scholarship eligibility criteria and application process.

Eligibility for the Chevening Scholarship

The Chevening scholarship is aimed at supporting talented individuals and future leaders worldwide in pursuing their Master's degrees in leading UK universities. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

• Country of Origin: You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. As of 2023, this includes 182 countries.
• Academic Background: You should have completed your undergraduate degree and be able to provide evidence of it.

• Work Experience: You typically need to show at least two years of work experience, which is equivalent to 2,800 hours. Various types of work experience are considered, including full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, or internships (both paid and unpaid). 
• Language proficiency: Proficiency in English is a must, as the majority of Chevening-funded courses are taught in English. Applicants must meet the English language requirements, often through tests like IELTS and TOEFL.

Chevening Scholarship Application Process

The application process for the Chevening Scholarship is highly competitive and rigorous. Below, we'll guide you through the required documents and application materials:

• Chevening online application form: Complete the online application form, including personal information, educational and work history, and your chosen courses.
• Reference letters: In your application, you need to include two reference letters: one academic and one professional.

• Essay Questions: As part of the application, candidates must respond to four Chevening Essay questions that demonstrate their leadership potential and commitment to making a difference in their home country. These essays cover Leadership and Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and the Chevening Career Plan (we will discuss how to write these essays in more detail in our next blog post).
• Interviews: Shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview, typically held at the British embassy or high commission in their home country. 

Application Timeline

When applying for the Chevening Scholarship, keep in mind the application timeline for 2023:

  • Applications open on 7th September and close on 7th November (12:00 GMT).
  • From November to mid-February, the Reading Committee assesses applicants.
  • By mid-February, shortlisted candidates are notified and invited for interviews.
  • At the same time, you must provide various educational records and proof of enrollment in your chosen program at eligible universities.
  • Chevening interviews usually take place in March/April, with successful applicants receiving their Chevening Awards in early June.

The Chevening Two-Year Rule

The Chevening Scholarship is designed to empower you to apply your newly acquired knowledge to benefit your home country and accelerate its development. Consequently, all Chevening candidates are subject to the Chevening Two-Year Rule, requiring them to return to their home country for a minimum of two years.
